Round Log
A house made of round logs looks rather like a perfect tower-chamber out of Russian fairytales, the sort of place usually inhabited by a Queen or a Princess. There are strict quality controls on round logs, and they have to be produced from mature trees that are of the same species. Each specimen is checked for rot, maggot and woodworm holes, and mechanical damage to the butt-ends and the processed surfaces. Nominal sizes are also checked.
A round cylinder log is processed in the following way: after having being shorn of its bark, a tree trunk is passed through a machine-tool with a milling cutter. This procedure turns the logs into cylinders with highly processed surfaces. The logs are then cut into the correct sizes - in marked places that are defined for each house, grooves, pins and locks (beam cups) are made. The wood is then coated with an antibacterial solution. After that, the logs are dried according to a strictly regulated set of procedures - the temperature should not exceed certain levels, and the drying time is quite long due to the fact that it is not desirable for only the outer layers to dry without the deeper layers drying as well. The log is treated by steam processing between drying sessions.
The diameter of a TM Rovaniemi cylindered log varies between 170 and 250 mm. Logs of smaller sizes are used in the building of wooden saunas (banyas) and gazebos. A cylinder log has a standard length, which is normally no longer than 6 metres. Longer logs are achieved by joining logs together.
- The aesthetically pleasing appearance of the logs make them very attractive – the rounded surfaces of the walls of a wooden house draw people to want to touch them repeatedly;
- Highly ecologically sound;
- Computer technologies, the even round forms of the cylindrical logs along with grooves and pins of strictly accurate forms, made to a high level of precision, leave minimal gaps and allow for the possibility of achieving the tight fitting of beams without painstaking fine-tuning;
- The chinking of the round Rovaniemi log differs from the traditional round profile. It has wedge-shaped (V-shaped) locks and, with insulation between the logs, they provide reliable protection to a house from the wind or dampness.
Rovaniemi offers the following typo sizes for round logs:
